Helping dogs traumatised by fireworks and thunder storms

It can be very distressing to see your dog suffering on firework’s night or during a thunder storm. Often they cannot sit still and the stress and anxiety they suffer can be very upsetting and worrying. So here are some tips on how to try and help and some recorded sounds that when used carefully at low volume in small stages, may help to desensitize your dog to these scary sounds.

Sweetie terrified by fireworks 2024

2024 Update https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/nov/14/fireworks-blamed-baby-red-panda-death-edinburgh-zoo-scotland-bonfire-night

PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE YOUR DOG ALONE WITH THESE SOUNDS PLAYING AT ANY TIME.
WHEN PLAYING THE AUDIO ALWAYS KEEP A CAREFUL EYE ON THEM AND START AT LOW VOLUME, GUAGING THEIR REACTION.

When using the audio below – please start with just a few seconds at low volume – watching your dog(s) at all times. Do a little bit at a time, gradually increasing the volume, and if they are not scared by it give them a treat and praise them.
If it upsets them, stop immediately. Later on, try again at a lower volume, but if it still makes your dog anxious, stop. The idea is not to scare them but to try and get them used to the sounds. Remember it will take time, and it may not work.

Other things to try…

  • A calming ‘Thundershirt’ https://www.thundershirt.co.uk/
  • Keeps doors and windows shut, close the curtains and distract your dog with other non-threatening sounds and music – e.g. turn the tv on and up the volume
  • Make sure they have a ‘safe place’ to retreat to – with water and treats – if that’s what they need to do, make it easy for them.
  • It may not be helpful to try and cuddle your dog through a scary noise episode – distraction techniques and finding a quieter place might be more beneficial
  • If concerned, consult your vet.
  • If you have any tips to add please make them in the comments section below or email admin@pennypawsrescue.org.uk

Ask UK Government Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) to lift the ban on the rehoming of dogs to the UK from Eastern Europe

Dogs like this are now stuck in Romanian killshelters because of the UK government ban

Without any warning in April this year, the government suspended the movement of cats, dogs and ferrets from Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, and Romania. For rescue organisations like Pennypaws Rescue this was a devastating development.
Originally the ban was for one month – but has now been extended to the 9th July 2022. The ban threatens the safety of dogs we are in the process of rescuing from appalling conditions in kill shelters in Romania, as well as driving small volunteer run rescue organisations like us to financial breaking point. Without rescue organisations more and more dogs will suffer in terrible coinditions. Whatever happens we are still working with our contacts in Romania to rescue dogs out there, and while the ban is in place we are now also rescuing dogs from Greece.

Pennypaws Rescue meticulously fulfills all the paperwork, conditions and vaccinations required by UK law to bring animals here. It makes no sense to ban dogs being rescued by us, and we desperately need the ban to be lifted on the 9th July or for animal rescue organisations to be exempted. There is genuine concern that the government will extend the ban indefinitely.

We desperately need the ban to be lifted on the 9th July but are very concerned that the government will extend the ban indefinitely.

What you can do to help lift the ban and save more dogs suffering in desperate conditions…

  • Write to your MP – it’s really easy to do – all you need is your POSTCODE and this link: WriteToThem.com
  • Sign the petition at change.org
  • Write to, or call DEFRA – 03459 335577 defra.helpline@defra.gov.uk
  • Write to the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Minister for Rural Affairs, access to nature and Biosecurity) The Rt Hon. the Lord Benyon email: benyonr@parliament.uk
  • Write to the All-party Parliamentary Dog Advisory Welfare Group (APDAWG) https://apdawg.co.uk/
  • Write to All-Party Parliamentary Group for Animal Welfare admin@apgaw.org
Please sign the petition to end the ban

Beautiful Buddy – saved from a kill shelter

Calling out for a special person!
My name is Buddy

Beautiful Buddy

I was saved from a kill shelter in Romania by PennyPaws Rescue several months ago and brought here to the UK.

I was fostered by a lovely family, but I found it really hard to fit into normal family life, after my experiences back in Romania. The challenges proved too much for me and I am upset to report that I have bitten because of that – but I have been a very good boy at the kennels with all my carers. I’m not a bad boy, and in the right environment I am a loving and loyal companion. My name used to be Bear but I’m much more suited to Buddy.

I find the pressures and expectations of family life too much to cope with and people (other than my special person) worry me and I get anxious and tense. I’m really looking for a single person home, with an experienced person who will be around most of the time although I don’t mind being left for reasonable periods on my own.
A place that is preferably rural with plenty of space where I wouldn’t need to go out on formal walks, as meeting strangers upsets me. Someone with a small holding who needs mainly just my company but has the capability of putting me out of the way if they have visitors as they too make me anxious.

If I can have all of this, I could be your best friend but you do need to be sure that you can give me this before you reply. If you feel that you can be my special person, please contact Gill Jenness 07795 803434 or email admin@pennypawsrescue.org.uk
