It can be very distressing to see your dog suffering on firework’s night or during a thunder storm. Often they cannot sit still and the stress and anxiety they suffer can be very upsetting and worrying. So here are some tips on how to try and help and some recorded sounds that when used carefully at low volume in small stages, may help to desensitize your dog to these scary sounds.
PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE YOUR DOG ALONE WITH THESE SOUNDS PLAYING AT ANY TIME. WHEN PLAYING THE AUDIO ALWAYS KEEP A CAREFUL EYE ON THEM AND START AT LOW VOLUME, GUAGING THEIR REACTION.
When using the audio below – please start with just a few seconds at low volume – watching your dog(s) at all times. Do a little bit at a time, gradually increasing the volume, and if they are not scared by it give them a treat and praise them. If it upsets them, stop immediately. Later on, try again at a lower volume, but if it still makes your dog anxious, stop. The idea is not to scare them but to try and get them used to the sounds. Remember it will take time, and it may not work.
Keeps doors and windows shut, close the curtains and distract your dog with other non-threatening sounds and music – e.g. turn the tv on and up the volume
Make sure they have a ‘safe place’ to retreat to – with water and treats – if that’s what they need to do, make it easy for them.
It may not be helpful to try and cuddle your dog through a scary noise episode – distraction techniques and finding a quieter place might be more beneficial
If concerned, consult your vet.

Sadly Maple was hit by a car, which damaged her hip (not her spine) and has left her without the use of her back legs
Unfortunately she wasn’t able to have physiotherapy at the time due to costs involved
Pennypaws only found Maple back in March (after her accident and surgery) on a team visit to the shelter in Romania. Maple didn’t belong to any charity but she now belongs to us
Maple deserves the best home, she is approx 8 years old and about 8kg
She will need to learn how to use a wheelchairโฆ which means wonderful bonding and a meaningful challenge
She is able to lift herself to toilet – she gets around by shuffling on her front paws at the moment
WHAT YOU WILL BE PROVIDED WITH IF YOU ADOPT MAPLE:
โข Lots of support from Pennypaws
โข A wheelchair
โข A drag bag
โข Lots of cuddles and kisses from Maple
WHAT MAPLE NEEDS:
Maple needs kind, loving adopters with time, patience and lots of love to give
Someone with open-plan space for her to wheel around, both indoors and outdoors, would be ideal
A resident dog would be ideal, as we feel having a canine companion could be wonderful for Maple
Her adopter will need to be able to afford veterinary bills for anything that isnโt covered by insurance, as well as have the time and commitment to help Maple rest, rehabilitate, find her feet and learn how to use her wheelchair
Most importantly, she needs someone who will give her the time she deserves to adapt to her new life โ a life filled with love, safety, care and happiness
All Maple needs is someone willing to see past her disability and see the beautiful, loving little dog underneath

Our older rescued Pennypaws dogs are longing to swap another bitter Romanian winter for a warm, safe, and loving UK home. Can you help them find the comfort they deserve?
To help these beautiful older dogs find their forever families before the freezing weather hits, our Senior Stars have a reduced adoption fee of ยฃ395.
Every senior dog has so much love left to giveโthey are typically calmer, wonderfully affectionate, and incredibly grateful for a cozy bed.
Pennypaws volunteer Jonathan Slatter is taking on a 21K Half Marathon on Saturday 19th September to raise urgently needed funds for dogs rescued from the kill shelters of Romania.
But Jonathan is also running for the Love of Lenny โค๏ธ
Lenny was a dear old boy rescued by Pennypaws in Romania. Thanks to the amazing support of Pennypaws supporters, he was able to spend his final months in a little more comfort, surrounded by love and care.
Now Jonathan is running in Lenny’s memory โ and for all the dogs who still desperately need our help.
A slight change of plan for my 21K run today to raise money for Pennypaws Rescue and in memory of the rescued old boy Lenny.
I was supposed to be running it round the Isle of Portland today to raise money for Pennypaws Rescue, and Zoey and I were going to sail down there and make a few days of it based in Portland Marina. Unfortunately, the strong winds have made sailing there with dogs a pretty bad idea. On top of that, I’ve unexpectedly ended up looking after another rescue dog called ‘James’ here in Bath, whose owner has sadly been taken seriously ill and is currently in hospital.
James needed somewhere to go urgently and so he’s here, and a lovely sweet boy he is – but with my two dogs already here, getting away to Portland on a boat became a bit of a logistical nightmare! So, rather than postpone the run, I’ve decided to simply bring the half marathon home.
I’m still running 21K today at 8am (Saturday 19th) โ it’ll just be around Bath rather than Portland. I’m heading out towards Bristol on the old Midland Railway Line – now known as the Bristol to Bath Railway Path, following the River Avon as it meanders towards Bristol.
21 kilometres. One spectacular route. One very special reason.
Every donation, however small, will help Pennypaws continue rescuing, caring for and finding loving homes for dogs who desperately need a second chance.
We are planning to sail across from Poole aboard Bear Poles and moor the boat at the excellent Portland Marina, using the boat as our base for the run. Zoey will stay onboard to handle the YouTube livestream (and look after the dogs!) while I attempt to run around the Isle of Portlandโฆ
Portland Marina is one of the nicest marinas on the south coast that we have stayed at, and we come here as often as we can. It has a great location, first-class facilities and a really relaxed and welcoming vibe.
If youโre visiting by boat, the pilotage is very straightforward and the visitor pontoons are the first ones you see as you enter the marina. Just call the marina on VHF Channel 80 or book in advance during busy periods. Itโs also worth listening to Channel 74 for Portland Port Operations, particularly if you are coming through the East Ship Channel (ESC).
The Isle of Portland itself is beautiful and historic, with lots of amazing walks and treasures to discover. If youโre feeling energetic, the walk all the way along to Portland Bill is well worth the effort. Alternatively, you can easily catch an open-top bus from near the marina entrance, next to the UK Sailing Academy.
On your doorstep youโll find great pubs, restaurants, cafรฉs and fish and chip shops, as well as Chesil Beach and the historic and busy commercial Port of Portland.
Itโs a brilliant place to visit by boat, and weโre really looking forward to spending a few days here around the run.

Dougie needs a home – He is In the UK in Morecambe
Meet Dougie… He was adopted at 6 months old. A Pennypaws boy from Romania.
About Dougie –
Dougie has always been a beautiful loving boy. He is now 2.5 years old and 22kg. So why does he need a home?
Here is Dougieโs story:
Dougie was living harmoniously with his little doggie sister for over a year when something terrible happened. Dougie witnessed a random dog attack with his owner whilst out on a walk, which changed him from a happy go lucky confident dog to a very worried one
Dougie now protects his owner on walks by being reactive to other dogs. The owner isnโt able to handle this and also has found that age/health isnโt on her side and she can no longer care for a young dog
Dougie has been working with a trainer and is only protective of his owner – because of this incident.
Dougie is fine with his little sister doggie. He is not good with cats
Adoption fee and other details to be shared directly with each applicant that applies
